India

A culturally, topographically, historically and ethnically rich country - full of romance, colour and mystique

Svatma, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu (S)

Svatma is a hotel with a difference in that it aims to immerse its guests into Tamil customs and a stay here will take you on a rich, cultural and culinary journey, aiming to reveal the hidden secrets, arts and crafts of the extraordinary city of Thanjavur (formerly Tanjore) – all the while, immersed in comfort and peace. Part 100 year old, painstakingly restored family home, and part new-build, the design and furnishings are influenced heavily by Tamilian building styles and materials.

There are contemporary, understated rooms in the ‘new wing’ which have state of the art fittings and various colour themes running through them. The old wing comprises more traditional rooms and suites which have been restored entirely in keeping with local culture and tradition. These spacious rooms have fresh, cream washed walls, polished floor boards, wooden pillars and beams and fun spots of bright colour – all of which give them a warm glow. Some have balconies or sitting rooms and they sit above a beautifully furnished, elegant sitting room which also houses some extraordinary artefacts – like a museum in itself.

Dining here is a veritable feast with delectable and hugely varied vegetarian delights on offer, either in the cosy dining room or under the stars on the chic rooftop terrace. Deep verandahs, a pretty garden, an interesting, enclosed pool and a superb spa all add to the atmosphere of relaxation, ‘slow life’ and physical restoration, after the rigours of exploring the city. Svatma is tucked away on a quiet lane and a stroll out from this peaceful sanctuary is a wonderful experience.

Encounter the contrast of plunging into the bustling streets of the city, whilst knowing you have somewhere special and serene to return to. When at ‘home’ try your hand at learning the art of classical dance, mat making, garland making, or cooking ‘pure veg’ food – you name it, you can do it here. This is one of the great plus points of the hotel, making it ideal for those wanting to immerse themselves in Tamil culture or perhaps teach a new skill to themselves or their children.

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Tamil Nadu, with easy links to other ‘must see’ places in this part of India, it’s a must for anyone visiting the state – at last a boutique hotel in Thanjavur! This really is a fascinating hotel with a solid foundation of spiritual classicism, connecting seamlessly with Tamil traditions, literature, art and architecture, but with all the modern comfort and style one could wish for!
