India

A culturally, topographically, historically and ethnically rich country - full of romance, colour and mystique

Shergarh, Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh (K)

Shergarh is a highly personal, exclusive small camp, surrounded by grasslands and sitting by a very pretty spring-fed lake, with the added bonus of being at the quieter, southern end of the park. It is the creation of naturalist Jehan and Katie Bhujwala, whose aim is to ensure a genuine, personal wildlife experience for all. It is a really lovely camp and epitomizes what a wildlife camp should be – peaceful, understated, close to the park entrance, run by truly dedicated wildlife people, and with a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Accommodation comprises 6 delightfully comfortable, roomy tents which are spread out in a small wooded area and each is very private. A low mud wall encloses a comfortable verandah outside each tent and the excellent fixed bathrooms have transformed this ‘camping’ experience, so you want for nothing. Pretty tiled roofs keep tents cool in summer, and hot ‘stone’ bags are placed in the beds for warmth in the winter months.

Evenings are spent together in The Main House, dining on delicious home-grown vegetables and locally caught fish. Everything here is as local as it can be, from the building materials to the produce you feast on. Having bought and re-wilded much of the land around the camp, it is now alive with ‘wild’ activity which provides fun ‘night walks’.

Camp fire dinners, candlelit bush dinners (when bugs permit) are all part of the memorable and romantic moments that Shergarh serves up! Being highly passionate about the environment, aside from only venturing into the park each day, Jehan will encourage you to explore the local village and tribal communities either on foot or by bicycle, and to go on bird walks.

Kanha National Park boasts wonderfully varied topography and vegetation and lies between the Satpura Range and the Maikal Hills, in the heart of Madhya Pradesh in Central India. One of the largest wildlife parks in India, Kanha is home to an enormous variety of animals and birds, and comprises rolling hills together with open meadows, sal and bamboo forest and grassy plateaus. Declared a national park in 1955, in 1973 it became one of the original 9 tiger reserves to come under the auspices of Project Tiger. The conservation of the barasingha (swamp deer) is one of the park’s success stories, with its population having increased seven-fold in the past 40 years.

A home away from home in a very beautiful, unspoilt part of central India. THE place to stay for anyone visiting Kanha National Park, wanting an authentic, brilliant, nurtured wildlife experience.
