Sher Bagh, Ranthambore

The inspired owner of Sher Bagh, Jaisal Singh, has created the perfect jungle camp, just a few minutes from the gates of Ranthambore National Park. Superbly comfortable tents are arranged in a semi-circle around a central tented pavilion. Each is stunningly decorated, and echoes the authenticity of the original 'shikar' tents. Equipped with all the home comforts one would want, this is paralleled by the true experience of being in the jungle. The bathrooms are even better, comprising a mixture of green marble and copper. The spacious, airy main lodge has a cosy sitting area with plenty of low seating and cushions and an excellent bar, where there is also a diverse selection of books for one's perusal. When not out game viewing (in the mornings and late afternoons), one can explore the beautiful 8th Century Ranthambore fort and discover the royal and heroic past of this wonderful land. Also, when relaxing around the Camp, you will find secluded shady areas where you can lie back on a day bed, looking across the fields and woodland. The nights are enjoyed around the camp fire, chatting with fellow guests or with the hugely informed naturalists. Amongst the highlights at Sher Bagh are the 'Jungle Massages' which are carried out in the privacy and comfort of your own tent and which are given by a trained masseuse. There aren't many places where you have the luxury of having a massage on your own bed, thus ensuring you don't have to move a muscle afterwards and that you can remain in a sublimely relaxed state for as long as you wish. A small but very pretty swimming pool will be added shortly and should be completed by October 2004 - perfect for cooling off in after your game drives. Sher Bagh really is the perfect place for nature and wildlife lovers, or for those looking for the ultimate experience in the jungles of India.

The Bagh, Bharatpur

Situated a couple of minute’s drive from the gates of Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary), The Bagh occupies ten acres of 200 year old gardens and orchards. Originally a ‘charbagh’ or four-part garden, it has been home to one of Bharatpur’s noblest families for centuries and is today a delightful small ‘heritage hotel’. Various new and old, restored buildings are scattered around the premises and are connected by pretty stone walkways, lined with shrubs and sweet smelling flowers. The gardens are a treat to wander around and are alive with birdsong from the many varieties of birds who have made this haven their ‘home’. Different buildings house different clusters of bedrooms, the bar, the restaurant and a small massage centre by the swimming pool. The spotless and comfortable rooms have a certain simple elegance with colourful yet subtle furnishings which fit with the wooden furniture and stone floors.

Anant Van, Bandhavgarh National Park

Perhaps best described as India’s first ‘non-hotel’, Anant Van is a very special place. Aimed at those who possibly already know and love India, the focus is not purely on wildlife but also on its habitat, local villages, re-forestation, conservation and village interaction. The brainchild and dream of Dhruv Singh, Anant Van is a singularly different type of hotel. The lodge encompasses the idea of running a small farm and village integration programme at the edge of the wildlife park. It offers guests a unique opportunity to pay more attention to and understand the details and daily goings on of the local community, together with (and equally important), paying attention to the camp’s participation in such a delicate environment as Bandhavgarh. The project is spread over 22 acres of overgrazed and deforested land. The objective is to regenerate the devastated land and bring it back as a thriving eco system. They have divided the project into 3 parts - 1) Forest regeneration, 2) Experiments in rural farming, near national parks, 3) Self sustenance through responsible tourism. The lodge comprises 2 cottage tents and 2 cottages, each being nice and private. These are comfortable but simple and are entirely in keeping with their environment and the eco-friendly focus of the camp. The grounds are stunning, surrounded by fields which you can wander through, and down to a watering hole and the local village which is full of friendly villagers.

Shergarh, Kanha National Park

Shergarh is the creation of naturalist Jehan Bhujwala and English wife Katie. It is a very exclusive camp, situated at the southern edge of the park, and provides a highly personalized and specialized wildlife experience for every guest. Both Jehan and Katie are very environmentally aware and there is a strong emphasis on this in the way the camp is run. It is a delightful, small, intimate place and is everything that you would expect a dedicated wildlife camp to be. Everyone eats together in the main dining room, discussing the day’s activities in the jungle. The atmosphere is one of calm and peace and it attracts committed wildlife gurus. Accommodation comprises 6 cosy tents (9 will be ready by February 2007), each with twin beds which can be made into doubles. They are well spread out in a small wooded area and each is very private. They have a front verandah with deck chairs and each has an attached bathroom with plenty of piping hot water (showers). The tents have thatched roofs which are watered in the warmer months to keep them cool. Each tent has an air cooler and electricity (with generator back-up) for the warmer months and hot ‘stone’ bags are provided in the winter months - it makes going to bed a very cosy experience! A unique and charming camp which will never grow large and ungainly.
