TARAGARH PALACE

Taragarh Palace, Kangra Valley
Taragarh Palace is 75 years old and is situated between the small towns of Palampur and Baijnath, just 45kms from Dharamsala and 55kms from Kangra. Lying in the heart of the Kangra Valley, in northern Himachal Pradesh, the palace is surrounded by a ring of foothills and the distant snow-capped peaks of the Dhauladhar Himalaya. The Royal Estate of the Maharajas of Jammu and Kashmir, it is set amidst tea gardens and a Camphor forest. This charming palace remains the royal estate of the Royal Family of Jammu and Kashmir but has been converted into a delightful hotel. Surrounded by an airy verandah and with grand rooms and corridors replete with the family’s history adorning the walls, it’s a fascinating place to stay. The bedrooms all vary in shape, size and design: some are huge, traditional and face the mountains; some are pretty, cosy and look out over the lawns; others are more modern and have a contemporary flavour. It makes the perfect base for visiting nearby Dharamsala which does not really boast anywhere particularly wonderful to stay, and the walking in the Kangra Valley is fabulous. There are numerous local monasteries and temples to visit and a multitude of idyllic picnic spots. Since the journey to Taragarh can be long, it’s a place to come for several days in order to really relax and make a holiday of it - there really is something for everyone here, and for all ages.
