Undoubtedly one of Kerala’s finest small beach hotels, Surya Samudra Kovalam is situated on a small cliff overlooking an expanse of beach on one side and a small, secluded bay on the other.
Well away from the bustle of Kovalam, guests stay here in one of 22 traditional Malayali (Keralam) style cottages which are scattered throughout a palm grove and interconnected by pathways. The cottages have been brilliantly re-constructed by literally transplanting whole homes from across the state. Each has a verandah and spacious open-air bathroom and is predominantly made of wood and furnished with exquisite, hand-picked, traditional furniture and artefacts. An abundance of windows allow the sounds of the sea to beguile you, and the omnipresent sea breeze to waft through.
Some of the suites have idyllic positions, perched on the cliff and afford magnificent ocean views. Others are set back in the foliage and scramble up the hillside. The unique cliff-side swimming pool and excellent spa will tempt you not to stray from this peaceful haven. ACCESS: is by air to Trivandrum from Bombay, Madurai, Delhi, Male and Bangalore followed by a 30 minute road journey. Alternatively it is accessible by road from Kanam, the 'backwaters' and Cochin.
