SHERGARH

Shergarh, Kanha National Park

Shergarh is a highly personal, exclusive small camp at Kanha National Park in central Madhya Pradesh with the added bonus of being at the quieter, southern end of the park. It is the creation of naturalist Jehan Bhujwala and his wife Katie, whose aim is to ensure a genuine and specialized wildlife experience for every guest. It is a really lovely camp and epitomises what a wildlife camp should be – peaceful, understated, close to the park entrance, run by truly dedicated and committed wildlife people, and with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Accommodation comprises 6 charming, spacious tents which are spread out in a small wooded area and each is very private. They have a shaded verandah with deck chairs and excellent, attached bathrooms with plenty of piping hot water. They are simply decorated in pale, muted colours which makes them feel fresh and light at the same time as blending with the environment. Their thatched roofs are watered in the warmer months to keep them cool, and hot 'stone' bags are placed in the beds for warmth in the winter months. Being highly passionate about the environment, aside from only venturing into the park each day, Jehan will encourage you to explore the local village and tribal communities either on foot or by bicycle, and to go on bird walks. Evenings are spent together in The Main House or dining out in the surrounding grassland or by the watering hole on warmer nights, feasting on delicious home-grown vegetables and locally caught fish. A home away from home in a very beautiful, unspoilt part of central India.

THE NATIONAL PARK

Kanha National Park boasts wonderfully varied topography and vegetation and lies between the Satpura Range and the Maikal Hills, in the heart of Madhya Pradesh in Central India. One of the largest wildlife parks in India, Kanha is home to an enormous variety of animals and birds, and comprises rolling hills together with open meadows, sal and bamboo forest and grassy plateaus. Declared a national park in 1955, in 1973 it became one of the original nine tiger reserves to come under the auspices of Project Tiger. The conservation of the barasingha (swamp deer) is one of the park’s success stories, with its population having increased seven-fold in the past 40 years.
