SHER BAGH

Sher Bagh, Ranthambore
The inspired owner of Sher Bagh has created the perfect jungle camp, just a few minutes from the gates of Ranthambore National Park.

12 wonderfully comfortable tents are arranged in a semi-circle around a garden and tented pavilion and camp fire. Each has its own verandah with comfy chairs and the interiors are stunningly decorated with exquisite ‘campaign’ furniture and excellent linen. The bathrooms are even better, comprising a mixture of green marble, stone and copper and with large, sunken showers. That said, the gorgeous tents are entirely in keeping with their jungle surroundings and manage to retain the stylish simplicity and authenticity of original ‘shikar’ tents. The spacious main lodge has a sitting area and an excellent bar / club on the upper level. It’s warm and cosy and welcoming on chilly evenings and cool and airy on warmer nights.

It also affords fabulous views of the surrounding hills and countryside, itself dotted with ancient watch towers. When not out game viewing, explore Ranthambore Fort, relax by a camp fire, drink fine wine, feast on delicious food, enjoy a pampering massage, flop by the pretty pool, go on camel rides or bird walks, chat to the hugely informative naturalists or find a secluded, shady area and lie back on a day bed, looking across the fields and woodland. The perfect place for dedicated nature and wildlife lovers who are looking for a genuine but deliciously comfortable jungle camp.

Having recently been asked to join (and accepted) the prestigious Relais & Chateaux, this dreamy camp deserves such an accolade as it’s delicious in every way!

THE NATIONAL PARK
Established as a sanctuary in 1955, this was one of the original areas covered by Project Tiger. Situated in south-eastern Rajasthan, it lies on a plateau at the junction of the Aravalli and Vindhya Hills. Covering 389sq kms, much of the area comprises arid scrub jungle, together with forested hills and artificial lakes. There is an impressive range of bird life and animal species include sambar, chital, nilgai, chinkara, wild boar, sloth bear, jackal and leopard. There is also a mighty 1000 year old fort which broods over the park.
Eco / environmental / responsible tourism policy
Sujan Luxury Hotels (Sher Bagh and The Serai) pride themselves in providing luxurious and authentic experiences to their guests. The highest levels of luxury and personalized service are their mantras, but so too is respect for the environment, local communities and the underprivileged. They do not believe their guests should have to worry about how much water they use or how many towels and clothes they give for laundry. That is, in their eyes, for them worry about, and they take the necessary steps to minimize their guests' and their impact on the environment.

They believe that they should give back to the environment, and not necessarily within the hotel. At Sher Bagh, they send all the waste-water into a reed-bed, which soaks in toxins and releases the water back into the table. They are looking into rainwater harvesting projects and working to use as much solar energy as possible. They already have re-forestation projects around Ranthambhore and also actively assist park management. In 2008 Sher Bagh donated a troop carrier for patrolling the park, and funded the construction of a well and water trough for animals in an area of the park facing huge water shortages.

They believe they should give back to the community and constantly endeavour to work with the villages around them by donating blackboards to schools or books, and other teaching apparatus. They have a state-of-the-art filtration system for their swimming pool which allows them to recycle, and therefore conserve precious ground water.

At each of their hotels, they predominantly employ locals, whom they train for each of the departments. At Sher Bagh, they employ about 30 locals of a total staff of 36. Each one of them is the 'bread-winner' of their family unit, which comprises 8 people on average.

They also practice organic gardening and encourage neighboring farmers to do the same.
