  • Deogarh Mahal, Deogarh

Very much a family concern, Deogarh Mahal is a large, rambling fort/palace with 60 rooms and which has become much loved by many. Despite it's ever-increasing size, it remains a very personal place. Over 300 years old, it has been beautifully restored from ruin by the innovative Deogarh family, who run their former home as a delightful, bustling hotel. A swimming pool, endless comfortable balconies and terraces for dining or relaxing on, and the pretty, traditional bedrooms are the result of the family's boundless energy and immense love and care. Spread randomly around the palace, they vary in shape and size and have a Rajasthani theme, whilst the bathrooms are equally fun and quirky. The surrounding town is one of the friendliest and cleanest to explore, and the countryside boasts wonderful picnic spots and derelict hilltop forts. A local train ride through the hills is an excellent and memorable way to explore the countryside, which is what Deogarh is all about. It is also renowned for its exquisite paintings. There is usually a family member around to chat to in the evenings, who will enlighten you to the history of the place – you may even be staying in your host's childhood bedroom! It offers delicious multi-cuisine menus and excellent Rajasthani home cooking. With its ideal position in the heart of the Aravalli Hills, it really is a must for anyone travelling in Western Rajasthan.

    SEENG SAGAR

    Fort Seeng Sagar, Deogarh

This delightful, tiny fort with just 4 rooms, sits on the edge of a small lake and is blissfully peaceful and beautiful. It surrounds an inner courtyard which has a small pond in the middle during summer and this transforms into a cosy fire to sit around during winter. The large terrace and rooftop ramparts look directly over the lake, the small lakeside pool and the surrounding rocky landscape - perfect places for long, lazy sundowners. Four circular turrets dominate each corner and these are home to bathrooms, bedrooms or sitting areas. The whole place is light and airy; the rooms are spacious and colourfully decorated with a fascinating mixture of traditional and modern Rajput furniture and all have a private balcony. It is fully staffed and your host is a charming ex-army Colonel and member of the Deogarh family. He's an amusing yet discreet man and will make your stay great fun but will not swamp you. Just 5km from Deogarh Mahal and close to the ruins of the deserted village of Manpura, there are wonderful places to explore and excellent rural walking and birdwatching to be done. Whilst staying here one may use all the facilities at Deogarh Mahal. It makes an ideal party venue or place to hire in its entirety if you're a family or group of friends. A small, exclusive place, full of Rajput charm and character.

    Deogarh Khayyam, Deogarh

    Deogarh Khayyam, Deogarh

For years, tents have played a vitally important part in desert and rural life in India. From the nomadic peoples of the northern deserts with their fixed, seasonal campsites, to the tribal communities of the rural areas; from caravanserais of traders, traversing the country plying their trade, to extravagant, Royal Hunting parties; tents have been a principal form of accommodation. There is no better way to experience the opulence of former Royal life than by spending a few days in a desert camp, being treated like royalty, whilst exploring rural villages, ancient temples and mighty forts. The new Deogarh Khayyam at Anjana, just 5kms from Deogarh Mahal, will allow you to do just this. 16 enormous and stunningly decorated tents sit on a natural, grassy dam overlooking a lake in an incredibly pretty area. Each tent has a large bedroom and sitting area, a separate bathroom and dressing room and a front verandah. In true Deogarh tradition, the camp is hosted / managed by a member of the Deogarh family and the emphasis here is on peace and quiet, local exploration, nature and scenery. The views are superb, the food delicious, the tents comfortable, and the atmosphere is enchanting. These tents are something not to be missed if travelling through the Aravalli Hills.
