Bamurru Plains, Nr. Darwin, Northern Territory

Bamurru Plains is situated in a spectacular location on the edge of the Mary River floodplains, a short distance from Kakadu National Park in the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory. The surrounding wetlands and savannah woodland harbour an extraordinary variety and volume of wildlife and birdlife. The floodplains are home to tens of thousands of Magpie Geese, Whistling Ducks, Ibis, Herons, Egrets and raptors, while the property on which the camp is situated also holds 5,000 head of buffalo and the nearby Mary River hosts one of the highest densities of saltwater crocodiles in the Northern Territory.

Underpinning this natural experience is a unique style of bush accommodation. Designed around the concept of 'Wild Bush Luxury', the free standing safari bungalows and lodge building at the camp are designed to expose guests to the sights and sounds of the surrounding bush. With supremely comfortable beds, 100% cotton linen, a choice of pillows and fabulous ensuite bathrooms with high pressure hot showers, guests should have a great night's sleep. It is the soft touches that surprise in this remote bush location and the understated luxury is very much in tune with the surrounding environment. Great food and wine are another key element and the chef has created an innovative menu with a touch of native produce and supported by premium Australian wines. Waking to the honking of the Magpie Geese and the whistling of the kites, you look out from your bed across the floodplains. The view is second to none and you can literally hear the little Agile Wallabies thumping their way past your room.

A key feature of the camp is its environmental philosophy. From the generation of power to the use of local soaps and the message that is communicated by the guides, a strong ecological concept underlies the entire operation. Activities from the camp focus on exploring the surrounding country, with airboat trips on the wetlands, river cruises in search of crocodiles, bush drives and guided walks. Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land are just a 20 minute flight away for those wanting to experience the region's Aboriginal culture. If guests just want to chill out in camp, the wet edge pool and surrounding deck is a great spot to sit back with a cool drink and let the wildlife come to you.

For anyone visiting the Northern Territory, travelling to Arhnem Land or Kakadu National Park, a visit to Bamurru is a must as there is nowhere quite like it in Australia. The inspired owner, Charles Carlow has managed to achieve his dream of bringing luxury African camp style and service to Australia and the result is Bamurru Plains – a little gem tucked away in the Top End. Truly magical, inspiring and spectacular at any time of year!

ACCESS: By road from Darwin, Kakadu or Arnhem land. Or by private plane to the camp.
